Writing for fun anymore seems to be an out dated activity. It’s at least an activity that is not done for fun anymore, with the exception of writing statuses on Facebook and Twitter. Too many everyday distractions prevent people from being able to sit down and write. Whether it be writing for school, or just jotting down notes in your journal. Which is exactly what we read about in Carolyn Chute’s piece “How can you create fiction when reality comes to call”. Here she gives an example of her everyday life. Her dogs needing to be walked, people coming to visit, phone calls to be made. But while all of this is going on her typewriter is shrieking for her to write. I can certainly relate to her. Especially with technology now a days its so hard to sit down and concentrate. Everyday I face distractions when trying to sit down and do my homework. Whether its texting, snap chats, facebook notifications, or my four year old running around like a mad woman I can never just sit and write.
In the second article “6 ways to be a Hemingway level productive bad ass” we were let in on 6 of the secrets that made Hemmingway who he is. His everyday rituals and habits hat let his mind free and made him become a better writer.
I think I could become a better writer if I were to set some sort of guideline for myself and not let myself get so distracted. Maybe if I had some sort of ritual that I can really engulf myself in my writing.
Six steps I think I can use to become a better writer are :
1. Find an empty room, free from distraction
2. Writing on paper instead of a computer so I’m not tempted to distract myself by going on the internet
3. Putting my phone in a different room
4. Having coffee/ some source of caffeine near me
5. Giving myself breaks to clear my head and expand my ideas
6. Writing freely and not worry if it’s formatted correctly, if the grammar’s right etc.
